Alice (Shively) Bunce, 95
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Alice (Shively) Bunce of Heron Point, Chestertown, died Saturday, March 31, 2007, in Heron Point. She was 95.
Alice was born in Kyoto, Japan, daughter of missionaries Dr. Benjamin Franklin and Grace (Ressler) Shively.
She attended high school at the Canadian Academy in Kobe, Japan, and graduated in 1933 from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. That same year she married William Kenneth Bunce; they resided in Japan, returning to the United States in 1939.
Following World War II, Alice joined her husband in Japan, where she served on several occasions as interpreter for the American ambassador's wife. As the wife of a foreign service officer, she was very active with volunteer efforts in Japan, India and Korea.
She later moved back to the Washington area where, because of her fluency in Japanese, she taught English to the wives of Japanese diplomats. She and her husband retired to Fairfax Station prior to moving to Heron Point in Chestertown.
In addition to her husband of 73 years, Alice is survived by two daughters, Sylvia Bunce Duvall of Salisbury, and Julie Bunce Elfving of Olathe, Kan.; two sons, Peter William Bunce of Chicago, and Michael Robert Bunce of Portland, Ore.; seven grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
One son, William Kenneth Bunce Jr., preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ressler Family Scholarship Fund at Otterbein College, Office of Advancement, One Otterbein College, Westerville, OH 43081-2006.
Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown.
