HARRINGTON - Alfred G.B. Mann of Harrington died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, in Silver Lake Center, Dover. He was 84.
Mr. Mann was born in Augusta, Kan., son of the late Frank and Nellie G. (Taylor) Mann.
He was a graduate of Augusta High School, class of 1942.
Mr. Mann served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked for the state of Delaware in Dover for over 20 years as manager of the Solid Waste Authority. In the early 1960s, Mr. Mann served as the city manager for the Town of Harrington. He was also the public works supervisor for the City of Dover from 1967 to 1985.
Mr. Mann enjoyed singing and in the 1960s he sang in small non-professional singing groups, as well as in the Trinity United Methodist Church choir.
After retirement, he went to work for the Delaware State Fair as manager of the planning department. Mr. Mann then joined the Delaware State Fair board of directors in 1987. He was involved in planning of new construction on the fair grounds. His expertise in public works and city management was an invaluable asset to the fair.
Mr. Mann was a leader in the formulation of the master plan developed for the Delaware State Fair in the mid-90s. His vision led to what is seen today from the revitalized infrastructure to the placement of roads and buildings.
Mr. Mann also served on the following committees of the Delaware State Fair: the executive board, the bylaws, facilities, Governor"s Day, parking and the long and short range planning committees.
He was also instrumental in the research for the Delaware State Fair"s 75th Anniversary Commemorative History Book.
Mr. Mann was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Harrington.
Mr. Mann served as mayor of Harrington.
He was an avid golfer and played every Wednesday in the Senior Men"s League at the Shawnee Country Club, Milford.
Mr. Mann was a life member of the Harrington Fire Co. and was a member of the Harrington Lion"s Club.
Both he and his wife, Lucille, joined the Shawnee Country Club when it was first built where he was a member for over 50 years.
Mr. Mann was a devoted husband and was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille (Tharp) Mann, in 2001.
He is survived by a brother, Phineas C. Mann of Cape Coral, Fla.; two nieces, Sandra Davis Eichbaum of University Park, Md., and Janet Johnson of West Plains, Mo.; and a nephew, John O. Davis of Claymont.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
