Alfred was born in Baltimore, son of the late Alfred A. Sr. and Frances (Snyder) Hunter.
He was a Master Mechanic with Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, Md., for 40 years and retired in 1981. Alfred was involved with the research and development of many different machine parts and troubleshooting of a variety of machines.

Prior to moving to Delaware, he and his wife attended Christ Church in Baltimore.
Alfred was a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic High School and at the time it ranked the third best high school in the United States.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1944–46, and was honorably discharged as a Motor Machinists Mate 3rd Class.
Alfred loved gardening and photography. He enjoyed grafting rose bushes and azaleas and always loved developing a new rose variety for everyone to enjoy.
