LEWES - Alberta Cowan passed away at her home on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017. She was born and raised in Lewes, daughter of the late Theodore and Gertrude (Wells) Polite. Alberta resided in Daphne, Ala., Punta Gorda, Fla. and then moved back to Milton. Alberta had worked as a hostess at the Hampton Inn in Alabama, Pizza Villa at Midway and was the restaurant terminal manager at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Restaurant. She enjoyed serving others and hosting parties and events and was the hostess on the Governor's Cruise. Alberta also operated a laundromat in Midway. Alberta was a lifetime member of the Midway Assembly of God Church. Alberta was a good cook; she loved children and was precious to anyone who knew her. Her smile brightened the room and when she hugged you, you knew you had been hugged. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Norman Newcomb, Sr., the father of her children; her second husband, Hugh Cowan; one son, Norman Newcomb, Jr.; a step-son, Kenneth Cowan; and siblings, Edgar Polite, Theodore Polite, Jr., Margaret Newcomb, Andrew Polite and Cecilia Hudson. She is survived by her children, Sandy West and husband John of Bridgeville, Joyce Burton of Milton, Faye Deppe and husband Richard of Georgetown, and Cecelia Hill of Seaford; a step daughter, June Schneider and husband, Harvey of Daphne, Ala.; 14 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, at Midway Assembly of God Church, 34677 Old Postal Lane, Lewes, where friends may call after 3 p.m. Burial will be private. Arrangements handled by Short Funeral Services, Milton. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Alberta's memory to the church, or Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
