HARBESON - Albert Burke was taken into eternal rest from his Harbeson home on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015. Born in Scranton, Pa., his life's journey of 96 years took him to many ports of the world while serving his country aboard Navy ships in World War II as a radarman. He was the recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation as a survivor of the U.S.S. Atlanta which sank during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the South Pacific. He enjoyed the more moderate climate of Delaware since 1999 when he moved in with family here following a fire which destroyed his Pennsylvania farmhouse. Al was hardworking and reliable with a great sense of humor. He loved and respected family and all of God's creations. Local family survivors include his sister, Ona Kalista; and nephew, Daniel Kalista of Lewes; niece, Janet Fogg and her husband Eric of Harbeson; and a great niece, Diana Fogg of Rehoboth Beach. The family would like to give special thanks to the radiation oncology staff at Tunnell Cancer Center for providing Uncle Al with new friendships and quality care, to the staff at Beebe Wound Care for their creative comfort measures, and to Delaware Hospice for compassionate help in his final days. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 12th, 2015 at 12:30 p.m. at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE 19966. Donations in Al's name can be made to the Tunnell Cancer Center, The Cancer Center Patient Special Needs Fund, 18947 John J. Williams Hwy, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 and Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.melsonfuneralservices.com.
