Dover - Yvonne, the daughter of the late Early and Lera B. Smith, was born July 4, 1942 in Recovery, Georgia and departed this life Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015 at Kent General Hospital in Dover, Del. Yvonne received her high school education in Attapulgus, Georgia and attended Savannah State University. She then moved to New York City and worked in telecommunications at Bell Atlantic Corporation before joining the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice, where she worked as a counselor and court liaison for almost 35 years. Yvonne, more fondly known as "Von" was a caring wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved making people smile, and would give you whatever she had without any regard for herself. She loved to cook (somebody was always coming over for dinner) and spend time with family and friends. She truly enjoyed simple pleasures. The "Georgia Peach" met a dashing young man from South Carolina in the "big city" and they married, a union of over forty-three years. They had three great kids. She seemed to have more than 24 hours in her day because she managed to work full-time (often night shifts) and never missed a beat on homework, school activities, or those great meals that were mentioned earlier. After an incredible career in the Big Apple she retired to enjoy a life of leisure in Dover in 1999. Yvonne was preceded in death by her husband, Louis L. Getter and is survived by her children, Lisa Getter of Silver Spring, Md.; Kera Getter of Houston, Texas; Jawaun Getter of Dover, De.; godson, Naji Lilley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Virgie (Paul) Dean of Macon, Ga.; two brothers, Bennie Lee (Shirley) Smith of Dover, Del. and William (Mary) Smith, Cairo, Ga.; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other family and friends. She is preceded in death by one sister, Valeria Wilson; two brothers, Early West and Zannie Smith; two beloved family pets Lady and Chewy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090. The Memorial Service will be at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division Street, Dover, DE on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 at 5 o'clock in the afternoon with a repast immediately following the service. Letters of condolence may be sent and guestbook signed at www.benniesmithfuneralhome.com Professional services entrusted to Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover, DE.
