Winfried Leo Mroz

DOVER - Dr. Winfried L. Mroz was born in Germany, the son of the late Hedwig and Max Mroz. After the usual schooling, he attended the University at Bonn, Germany, where he obtained his degree of Doctor of Medicine. In 1956, he immigrated to the United States and continued his post graduate training in White Plains, N.Y., and Bridgeport, Conn. He served two years in the U.S. Air Force at Dover A.F.B. In 1964, he opened his private practice in Dover. He was a fellow of the Board of OB-GYN, having obtained his specialist certification in 1967. He was a past president of the staff of Kent General Hospital, and a past president of the Kent County Medical Society. He retired in 1995. During his retirement, he served as a teacher at the Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning, teaching history and language classes.
He lived with his family on a farm west of Dover, raising horses and running a riding stable, where many children learned to ride. He was a life member of the Soaring Society of America with a certificate for single engine planes, as well as gliders and a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for 15 years. He was also a member of the Dover Early Music Consort, the Viola Da Gamba Society and Early Music America, as well as a co-founder and member of both the Dover Symphony and the Dover English Country Dancers. Dr. Mroz was a member of Christ Church and also Honorary Staff at Kent General Hospital, where he served as an active staff member for 31 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Dr. Edith Maria Mroz. He is survived by his sister, Anne Marie; his children, Chris, Peter, Rosemarie and Paul and their spouses; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two nieces; and three nephews.
There will be a gathering to pay respects on Sunday, Apr. 2, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., that will include family eulogies at 12:30 p.m., at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, DE 19934. Burial will be private.
