William Potter Dukes, 71

DENTON, Md. - William Potter Dukes, of Denton, died Friday, May 16, 2008, in Perry Point Veterans Hospital. He was 71.

Born in Baltimore, Mr. Dukes was the son of the late Levi Reyner Dukes and Esther Willey Dukes.

He was a graduate of the Severn School and attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He then graduated from Washington College and proceeded to teach at the Severn School.

Mr. Dukes went traveling and taught in Tasmania and The Bishop's College in The Grenadines. He then taught in the Talbot school system for several years.

In 1974, he started the Heartland magazine, which he published for 20 years until retiring in 1994 for health reasons.

He was a member of The Society of Cincinnati, the Caroline County Historical Society and Christ Episcopal Church in Denton.

Mr. Dukes is survived by one daughter, Anna-Genevieve Palmer Dukes of Savage; one sister, Margaret Louisa Pine of Baltimore; one niece, Margaret Pine Utermohle and her son, Jonathan Pine, both of Baltimore; and his former wife, Kristin Dukes of Centreville.

A private memorial service will be held by the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to the Caroline Historical Society, 16 N. Second St., Denton, MD 21629.
