Rutherford, 86

MILLSBORO - William A. Rutherford, of Millsboro, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at his home. He was 86.

Mr. Rutherford was born July 27, 1921, in Wilmington, to the late John Burton and Bessie (Shipley) Rutherford.

He retired in 1981 as a service foreman with Diamond State Telephone, now known as Verizon–Delaware, after 40 years of service.

Mr. Rutherford was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Millsboro.

He served as past president of the Millsboro Lions Club; was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; was past commander of American Legion Post 34, Wilmington; was past commander of Indian River Post 22, Millsboro; was past president of the Sussex Central Ruritan; was a charter member of Granite Lodge 34 A.F.&A.M., Wilmington; was past chapter president of the Liberty Bell Chapter Telephone Pioneers; was past president and a life member of Diamond State Telephone Pioneers; was a member of Nur Temple, New Castle; and was past president of the Lower Delaware Shrine Club.

Mr. Rutherford is survived by his wife, Louise (Henry) Rutherford; two daughters, Leslie A. Collins of Bear and Carol Wilson of Townsend; one stepson, Gary Morris of Fort Collins, Colo.; one stepdaughter, Gail McInerney of Newark; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be noon Feb. 26 at the Grace United Methodist Church, Church and Morris streets, Millsboro, where friends may call one hour before the service.

The Rev. Rob Townsend will officiate.

Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, at a later date.

Instead of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Grace United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 566, Millsboro, DE 19966.
