Schobelock, SEBASTIAN, Fla. - Wanda Wilkie Schobelock, died May 6, 2012, in Rome Ga., after a long illness. Born October 2, 1926, in Detroit Mich., Wanda grew up in Milford Del. In 1950, she married John Schobelock and together raised their family primarily in Northern Va. She was blessed with a full life of learning and love of family. Teaching was a central theme in her life, exemplified by the way she raised her six children and helped others to learn. She graduated from Milford High School, was captain of her basketball team and sang in the church choir. After graduating from West Chester State Teachers College, she taught Physical Education in the Philadelphia area. At this time, her relationship grew with John Schobelock, who had been a flight instructor in WWII, and they were soon married. While raising her children, she studied for post graduate degrees in Special Education and Remedial Reading at Syracuse University and the University of Maryland. She had a passion for helping people overcome learning challenges; tutoring elementary students with dyslexia and later volunteering with the Brevard County Literacy program, where she helped establish reading and literacy programs within the Florida prison system. With her warm smile and encouraging tone, Wanda left a positive imprint on her family and many friends. She embraced her Catholic faith and said being a mother was her most important job in the world. Education was stressed at home where she often assisted her six children with homework and used her fine athletic skills to teach them how to swim, play basketball, baseball, tennis and the importance of sportsmanship. In her later years, Wanda turned towards writing and family history, researching her mother's childhood and compiling it into 'Doris Remembers', an account of her mother's family as homesteaders on the rugged plains of Canada. Wanda took great pleasure in a family that grew to include many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, helping them all discover the joys of reading and learning. Wanda is survived by her husband of over 61 years, Col. John V. Schobelock; sister, Joyce Hart of Dover, Del.; son, David Schobelock and wife Laurie of Hobe Sound Fla.; daughter, Mary Anne King and husband Thomas King of Jacksonville N.C.; son, Dr. Thomas Schobelock and wife Janet of Dallas Texas; son, Steve Schobelock of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Loraine Barge and husband Dr. John Barge of Rome Ga.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 Great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Christine Schobelock Davis of Gastonia N.C.; and brother, Rea Wilkie of Dover, Del. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to Alzheimer Association or Christendom College, 134 Christendom Dr., Trout Royal, VA. 22630. Services for Mrs. Schobelock will be conducted Wednesday May 9, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rome, GA. at noon. The family will receive friends Tuesday May 8, 2012, at Daniel's Funeral Home from 6 until 7 p.m. with a rosary to follow. Interment will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Daniel's Funeral Home has charge of the funeral arrangements.
