REHOBOTH BEACH - Walter W.J. Harmon, of Rehoboth Beach, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, after a brief illness. Walter was born on Sept. 6, 1916, in Philadelphia, to the late Elizabeth Osborne and Clinton L. Harmon. Walter attended Rabbit's Ferry School, Rehoboth School 200-c, Lewes Jr High School, and Delaware State College High School for Colored (now DSU). Walter was a lifetime member of Mt. Pleasant UM Church, now Faith UM Church in Rehoboth. Walter served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and was also a Trustee, a member of the UM Men, Senior Choir, Sons of Joy Chorus and Unity Male Chorus. He was employed by Vessels Sawmill and Lumber Yard, Lewes, for over 27 years, and with Noble Fraser, Contractor, Rehoboth Beach, until his retirement in 1985. Walter had gifted hands and was considered a Master Carpenter and Cabinet Maker. Walter and his wife, Edna, were caretakers of the William Cook family in Rehoboth Beach for over 30 years. His wife of 67 years, Edna, preceded him in death in 2008. He is survived by two sons, Waymon E. (Sarah) of Rehoboth Beach, and Wardell E. (Gloria) of New Castle; a daughter, Waynne H. Paskins of Rehoboth Beach; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great-grandchildren. He and his wife were foster parents to Cornelia P. Suggs of Upper Marlboro, Md., Steven D. Allen of Smyrna, and Orlando B. Allen of Oxford, Pa. Services will be 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Faith UM Church (formerly Mt. Pleasant), 19940 Church Street, Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call two hours prior to the service and from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday evening. Rev. Jerome Tilghman Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in People's Memorial Park. Condolences may be faxed to 302-947-9442. Arrangements by Robert W. Miller Funeral Service.
