W. Henry 'Pop' McGuire, 76

GOLTS, MD - W. Henry "Pop" McGuire, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, in Union Hospital, Elkton, Md. He was 76. Mr. McGuire was born on Jan. 10, 1932 in Locust Grove, Md., son of the late George W. and Maude E. Cole McGuire. He was a lifetime resident of Kent County living in Golts since 1964. He began his career farming with Sandy Huey for over 20 years and in 1977 went to work for Maryland State Highway Adm. in Chestertown, retiring in 1994. Mr. McGuire loved Blue Grass and County music where friends would gather to play, at his home on Sunday afternoons for over 30 years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and racing ponies. He was preceded in death by his son, David L. McGuire; a brother, John T. McGuire Sr; and two grandchildren, Christian Nicole McGuire and Michael Heimbach-McGuire. Mr. McGuire is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary L. Holding McGuire; three sons, George T. McGuire and his wife Mary, of Golts, W. Clayton McGuire Sr. and his wife Robin, of Chestertown, Md., and Charles G. McGuire Sr., of Dover; a sister, Esther Sapp, of Wellborn, Fla.; a brother, J. Edward McGuire, of Smyrna; eight grandchildren, Cyndi, David, C.J., Katie, Charlie Jr. and Joey McGuire, Roger and Sally Pearson; four step-grandchildren, Ashley, Jennifer, Angela and Sabrina Reed; and three great-grandchildren, Brae Ann, Nikes and Lea. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, where service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 15, 2009. Burial in Galena Cemetery. Memorials may be offered to National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.
