Virginia F. Tompkins, 66 ACTON, Mass. - Virginia F. Tompkins, 66, a resident of Acton, Mass., since 1974, died Dec. 10, 2009, after a short illness at Concord Healthcare Center in Concord, Mass. She was born Virginia Ann Field in Fayetteville, N.C., on March 11, 1943. She was the first child of the late Earl R. Field and Ruth Porter Field, longtime residents of Wyoming and Dover. Virginia was raised in the Camden-Wyoming area of Delaware. She graduated from Caesar Rodney High School in 1961 and earned a bachelor's degree in music and a master's in special education, both from the University of Delaware. She married David O. Tompkins in 1963. The couple moved to Massachusetts in 1967 and finally settled in the Village of Nagog Woods in Acton. Over a ten-year period, Virginia taught school in Winthrop, Wakefield, Wilmington and Boxborough, Mass. In addition to her husband, David, she is survived by a sister, Martha Tipton of Stockton, Calif.; three brothers, Russell P. Field of Newark, Gregory A. Field of Fayetteville, Ark., and Warren J. Field of Reno, Nev.; an aunt, Virginia Scott of Edmond, Okla.; two uncles, Robert Field of Pleasantville, N.J., and Herbert Porter of Durham, N.C.; several cousins and two nephews. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming.
