Una Lee Massey McLeer, 82

CHESTERTOWN - Una Lee Massey McLeer, of Chestertown, died on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at her home. She was 82.

She was born in Stratford, Conn. on Dec. 3, 1924, the daughter of the late Augustine Herman and Una Lee Tucker Massey.

Following graduation from Connecticut College for Women, Mrs. McLeer attended Yale Drama School and earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Miami in Florida.

She then earned a master's degree from Adelphi University in speech and hearing pathology. She practiced for more than 25 years in New York and retired at the age of 65.

Mrs. McLeer moved to Chestertown in 1989.

She was a member of the Red Hatters, Rock Hall Garden Club, Chester River Yacht and Country Club, St. Andrew's Society of the Eastern Shore, St. Augustine and St. Clement's Episcopal Church.

Mrs. McLeer enjoyed playing golf with the women's 9-holers, tennis, and traveling with the Kent County Theatre Group.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Myers McLeer, in 1995; and a brother, Augustine Herman Massey Jr. and Janetze Varleth Sterchi.

Mrs. McLeer is survived by two daughters, Una Lee McLeer Penninger of Chestertown and Laureen Dorothy McLeer Free of Chesapeake City; three sisters, Professor M. Minnette Massey of Coral Gables, Fla., Roberta Massey Tomberg of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Amanda L. Clark of Coconut Grove, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Una Lee Penninger of Chestertown, and William Holt Penninger III of Springfield, Mo.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday in St. Clement's Episcopal Church in Massey.
