Thomas Clark Jackson died at home on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 surrounded by his wife and three children.
Tom was born September 29, 1944 in Dover, son of the late James Bice Jackson and Doris Clark Jackson. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles Terry Jackson, II.
He graduated from Dover High School in 1962; attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. graduating in 1966. He also attended UNC Law School graduating in 1970. Tom joined the law office of Terry and Terry (Max Terry, Sr. and Max Terry, Jr.) in 1970. Within a few years, his lifelong friend Harry K. F. Terry and William Wright joined Max and Tom to form Terry, Jackson, Terry and Wright. After purchasing 438 S. State Street in 1990, Tom opened his own office, a solo practice, from which he retired in 2008. He had an extensive real estate practice but also did personal injury and represented several local businesses. Tom had a deep appreciation for his loyal and devoted Staff who in return had a great respect for his support and integrity. He loved practicing law working to do his best for all clients. In business and in his private life he was regarded as a gentleman known for his character and honesty.
Tom had the privilege and joy of living his whole life in Dover maintaining close relationships with his family and lifelong friends. For over fifty years he enjoyed daily lunches with Terry, Joe, Bob, Max, Harry and Chick, with occasional visits from Tom, Rob and David. Over the course of his life, he was a member of the Rotary Club, Maple Dale Country Club, Wild Quail Country Club and Christ Episcopal Church.
He was on the Board of Kent General Hospital (1978-1983); a member of the Kent County Bar Association; a member of Friends of the John Dickinson Mansion (President 2011-2013); lifelong supporter and member of Friends of Old Dover; and a member of The Society of Colonial Wars in Delaware (Governor 2013-2015) and had served as Chairman of the City of Dover Ethics Commission (1998-2018).
Tom is survived by his wife of over 51 years, Martha Anne Saunders who he met on a blind date in Winston-Salem, N.C. in 1967, having been introduced by his UNC roommate; three children, Anne Jones and her husband Thad of Charlottesville, Va., Jimmy Jackson of Charlottesville, Va. and Bill Dunn of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jackson, Thomas and Henry Jones, and Maggie, Katie and Will Dunn.
Tom first and foremost was known as a family man, truly content when at home with his wife, children and grandchildren. He had a spiritual love of nature, was an avid reader and student of history. He had an infectious laugh and wonderful sense of humor. Tom enjoyed golf and scored a hole-in-one on WQ #17, witnessed to his delight by family members. Whatever he was doing he was happiest when doing it with Martha Anne.
A memorial service is planned for May 1, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, State and Water Streets, Dover.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the Friends of Old Dover (P.O. Box 44, Dover, DE 19903) or to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation (733 Third Ave., Suite 510, New York, NY 10017)
