Terry T. (Schmidt) Dannemann, 81
DOVER - Terry T. (Schmidt) Dannemann of Dover died Saturday, April 21, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 81.
Terry was born in Przemysi, Poland and was the sole member of her family to survive the Holocaust.
Terry and her husband, Ernst, founded Dannemann Fabrics in 1949 which expanded to 16 stores from New York to northern Virginia.
Terry was an active member and past president of the Delaware League of Women Voters.
She was also a member of Hadassah and actively supported numerous Jewish and other charitable causes.
Terry graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelors degree in political science in 1980 after working on her degree for over 20 years.
She visited many classrooms in Delaware schools to talk about her Holocaust experiences.
Terry is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ernst; two daughters, Gene Dannemann, Gail Tolpin and her husband, Eugene; grandchildren, George and his wife, Lauren Dannemann, Ben Tolpin, Daniel and his wife, Laura Tolpin, Jeremy Dannemann and Leba Tolpin; great-grandchildren, Elimelech and Michael; and her special friend, Ruth Warner Pagirsky with whom she escaped the Holocaust.
Call the Schoenberg Memorial Chapel at 762-0334 for details of the service on Monday with burial in the Jewish Community Cemetery on Foulk Road, Wilmington.
Shiva will be observed Monday at the home of Gail and Gene Tolpin, Tuesday at the home of Ernst Dannemann and Wednesday at the home of Gene Dannemann.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either Compassionate Care Hospice, 5610 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE 19808; or to Chabad of Delaware, 1305 Grinnell Road, Wilmington, DE 19803.
