STUART, Fla. - Terry Allen Thommes of Stuart passed away Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, in Stuart. He was 53.
Born in Plainfield, N.J., he resided in Stuart since 1998 after moving there from Big Pine Key.
He was an accomplished sculptor and his major art works may be seen throughout the United States and Europe. He was director and sculpture area chair at The Armory Art Center, West Palm Beach. He was sculptor instructor at The Lighthouse Center for the Arts, Tequesta, adjunct instructor at Florida Keys Community College, Key West, assistant professor of sculpture at University of Georgia Studies Abroad Program, in Cortona, Italy, and director of art workshops in Arezzo, Italy. He was currently working on a major commission for the City of Palm Beach Gardens.
He received his bachelor's degree in fine arts from Western Michigan University in 1976 and his master's degree in fine arts from the University of Georgia in 1980.
He was predeceased by his father, William Burnside Thommes.
Surviving is his wife of 23 years, Barbara (Jackson) Thommes; his mother, Nancy (Coley) Thommes of Stuart; his son, Alexander Randall of Stuart; his daughter, Leanna Marie of Stuart; his brothers, Brooks W. Thommes and his wife, Susan of Cudjoe Key, Dean Coley Thommes and his wife, Gillian of Stuart, Gary Allen Thommes and his wife, Rosemarie of Troy, Mich.; a mother-in-law, Helga W. Jackson of Milford, Del.; a sister-in-law, Susan Jackson Emory of Milford, Del.; and his nieces and nephews, Christopher, Lindsay, Montana, Nicholas and Neil.
A celebration of Terry's life will be held Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Palm City at 11 a.m. with Pastor Tom Hartley, officiating. His ashes will be scattered in the waters off the Florida Keys.
