CRUMPTON, MD. - Susie Elizabeth Wersten of Crumpton died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, in Chester River Manor, Chestertown. She was 89.
Mrs. Wersten was born April 3, 1917, in Church Hill, daughter of the late Hurvey and Mary (Ireland) Starkey.
She worked for the Laytex Corp. for 30 years on the assembly line.
Mrs. Wersten was a life member of the Crumpton Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary and served in several administrative positions within the auxiliary. She was a member of the Auxiliary for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 652 in Millington. She was also a member of Crumpton United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed going to the annual fire conventions each year in Ocean City. She enjoyed selling Avon products for many years. Some of her hobbies included bingo, ceramics, cooking and baking for friends and family, canning, gardening, traveling and spending time with her friends and family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank E. "Skip" Wersten in 1995; four brothers; four sisters; three half sisters; and two half brothers.
She is survived by a daughter, Frances Jean Dennis of Leesburg, Fla.; two sons, Robert Wersten of Leesburg and Richard Wersten of Crumpton; a brother, Bowen Starkey of Church Hill; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Crumpton Cemetery.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Crumpton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 343, Crumpton, MD 21628; or Crumpton Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 68, Crumpton, MD 21628.
