DOVER - Stephen James Sackie, of Dover, died Friday Dec. 3, 2010, at Kent General Hospital. He was 78. Mr. Sackie was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Barnesboro, Pa., to the late Stephen Sackie and Mary Litavish Sackie. He was a veteran of the United States Army for two years during the Korean War and enlisted into the United States Air Force shortly after and served in the Vietnam conflict retiring after 26 years of military service in 1977. After his retirement he worked for Philadelphia Bulk Mail Center in Philadelphia retiring in 1994 after 13 years. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, AARP, Disabled American Veterans Club and the American Legion Post #2 Walter L. Fox. Mr. Sackie enjoyed volunteering with other veterans at the Dover Air Force Base Air Terminal greeting Soldiers, Airmen and Marines upon their return from overseas deployments with coffee and donuts. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Kwasnicki; brothers, Robert and Albert Sackie. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dora Christel Derlath Sackie of Dover; children, Monica G. Sackie of Fairfax, Va., Linda M. Gormley and husband Paul of Erial, N.J., and Thomas J. Sackie and wife Marci of Fairfax, Va.; brothers, John Sackie and Flossie of Columbus, Ga., Fred Sackie of Clearfield, Ga.; sisters, Dorothy Sackie, Patricia Blankenship and Margaret Sackie all of Bridgeton, N.J.; grandchildren, Nicholas Sackie and wife Sara, USMC, Kimberly Sackie, Katie Sackie, Emily Sackie, and Noelle Sackie all of Fairfax, Va., Herbert Holding, Ryan Holding both of Erial, N.J. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 7, 2010, at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 East Lebanon Road, Dover. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in Arlington Cemetery at a later date. Letters of Condolence may be sent and guest books signed at torbertfuneral.com.
