SMYRNA - Sherrill A. McGuigan, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully after a brief illness on July 18, 2016. At the time of her death she was surrounded by her loving family. Sherrill was preceded in death by her eldest daughter Michelle Marie McGuigan; her husband of 49 years James E. McGuigan Jr.; her mother Marjorie M. Cantler; and her father Milton R. Cantler. Sherrill is survived by her children, James E. McGuigan lll, Sherri McGuigan Blevins and her husband Keith Blevins, Mark A. McGuigan, and Brian M. McGuigan; as well as her grandchildren, Anne Nicole Rose and her husband Joe, Casey E. Blevins, Matthew J. McGuigan, Chelsea A. McGuigan and Michael McGuigan; and her great-grandchildren, Joey Rose and Olivia Rose; as well as her brother, Donald Cantler; her niece, Sheila Cantler Pacheco and her husband Angelo; and many other nieces and nephews. Sherrill was born in Wilmington, Del. on Feb. 10, 1946 to Milton and Marjorie Cantler. Sherrill Attended Christ Our King Catholic School through eighth grade. She then attended P.S. DuPont High School where she met the love of her life, Jim McGuigan. Sherrill and Jim were married at Christ Our King church on February 16, 1963. What Jim and Sherrill had together was the rarest kind of bond; it was the perfect love that bound them together forever. Five children were the product of that love. Sherrill's devotion to Motherhood was absolute and unconditionally loving. Sherrill was a housewife during her early years. When her oldest son was old enough to watch his siblings, Sherrill ventured into the workforce. She work at various department stores and businesses in the cash office, as keeping track of money was her specialty. No one could stretch a dollar farther than Sherrill. In the late 1980's she began working at the Smyrna School District at Clayton Elementary School as a Title One instructor. She then transferred to Smyrna Elementary School where she spent the next 18 years in the same field. She transferred back to Clayton Elementary before retiring in 2003. Sherrill loved being a part of the Smyrna School District, and she loved educating young students. She also loved the people she worked with, and formed close bonds with many coworkers, most notably Wendy Faulkner. Sherrill loved being a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother more than anything in the world. The only thing that came close to rivaling this was her love for the beach. Sherrill and her husband Jim spent every waking minute at the beach. Upon retirement, Sherrill and her husband lived at the beach from April until October every year until Jim's death in 2012. For 25 years the beach was their second home. Sherrill will be missed by many, but by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren most of all. Sherrill instilled in each of her Children and children's children that anything is possible, and that in every situation…always follow your heart. Sherrill would like to be remembered for being a loyal and loving wife, and a dedicated mother and grandmother, and for cherishing her family. She was extremely proud of her children, and grandchildren. She was hardworking, fair, honest, faithful, and genuine. Her children noted that her heart had the ability to absorb the pain from others, and take it into herself. She would carry it so those around her would not suffer. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Theresa Little for being Sherrill's dedicated doctor for over 20 years, and to the amazing nurses at Kent General Hospital, especially to the team that shared Sherrill's last moments together in the ICU Unit with the family. The devotion, and compassion, and care you showed our Mother will never be forgotten.
