Sheila Paige Dominy, 84
SHELTER ISLAND, N.Y. - Sheila Paige Dominy died peacefully in her home on Shelter Island, N.Y. on June 11, 2007, after a long illness. She was 84.
She was born in New York, N.Y. and spent summers in Bellport, N.Y. It is there that she met her husband Charles: They were married in 1944.
She and her husband raised their family in Bellport until 1968, when they moved permanently to Shelter Island.
An avid reader, crossword puzzle, cryptogram and word game enthusiast, she achieved a life long goal in the late 1960s, achieving her High School Equivalency.
Throughout her life, she wrote lovely poetry, some of which was published.
She was an avid supporter of libraries, and volunteered her time off and on throughout her life.
She was also a volunteer at the hospital, historical society and other community based projects both in Bellport and in Shelter Island.
Having spent summers in Bellport in her youth, she grew to love the water, as well as all of the activities associated with it. She and her family spent many enjoyable hours sailing, fishing, swimming or motor boating throughout her life.
She enjoyed time with her husband on the golf course.
In later years, she took great pride in her yard and flower beds.
Fiercely independent, she was still driving and running her own errands until the final weeks of her life.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles, in 1997; and her brother, Peter Paige, in 2003.
She is survived by her son, Matthew Dominy and his wife, Day of Washington, D.C.; her daughter, Vicky Cairns and her husband, Jack of Dover; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary McGuirk of Bel Air, Md.; and many close and loving friends. She was known and loved by the entire Shelter Island community.
There will be no services and burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family requests donations in her name to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978; or Shelter Island Senior Services, P.O. Box 970, Shelter Island, NY 11964.
