Sarah Marie Matthews, 79

HARRINGTON - Sarah Marie Matthews, 79, of Harrington, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, in Milford. Mrs. Matthews was born March 10, 1930, the daughter of the late Robert W. and Pearl J. (Bradley) Hammond. She was a graduate of Milford High School, class of 1948. She worked as a Secretary for 7 years at N.B. Downing Company, then for 9 years at Propane Gas Co and then 24 years at Taylor Marine Center, before retiring. She was also a loving housewife and mother. Sarah loved to travel, especially to Florida in the winter. As her children grew up, she enjoyed being involved in family activities such as fishing, school sports and horse shows. She will be fondly remembered for her strength when facing hardships, her adventurous spirit and her Sweet Tooth. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar B. Matthews, Jr.; her children, Oscar B. Matthews III and Shirley M. Matthews; and brothers, Robert W. Hammond, Jr. and John W. Hammond. She is survived by her sister, Mary Alice Sharp of Greenwood; a niece and caretaker, Debbie Winkler of Felton; a nephew and caretaker, James Sharp of Milford; one granddaughter, Cindy Herring of Keno, Pa.; and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Milford - Harrington Highway, Harrington. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Huntington's Disease Society of America, 505 Eighth Ave, Suite 902, New York, NY 10018.
