Townsend - Sarah L. Briscoe of Townsend died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, in her home. She was 87.
Mrs. Briscoe was born July 15, 1919, daughter of the late Robert Edward and Mary Jane (Henry) Hicks.
She was a lifetime resident of Townsend and received her education in the Townsend public schools.
On April 4, 1939, she married James Wesley Briscoe Jr. and had four sons and a daughter.
Prior to losing her sight to glaucoma more than 30 years ago, Mrs. Briscoe worked in the cannery in the Townsend area.
She enjoyed reading, sewing and traveling, especially bus trips to Canada and many other places. She loved hearing the hymns and gospel songs and would follow the men's choir to various services. Her favorite song was "I Am Redeemed."
Mrs. Briscoe was a lifelong member of Lee-Haven United Methodist Church where she faithfully attended and helped out wherever she could.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her four sons; James, Carl, John and Lawrence.
She is survived by a daughter, Grace Kay (Briscoe) Travis of Wilmington; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 40 great-great-grandchildren; three nieces; devoted friends, Margaret Clifton and Booker Reed; and a host of friends.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in Lee-Haven United Methodist Church, Townsend.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Lee-Haven United Methodist Church Cemetery.
