KENTON - Sara R. Hughes, of Kenton, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, April 12, 2016. Sara was born July 17, 1923 on Neville Island, Pa., the daughter of the late Ernest and Margaret (Wyles) Ranshaw. Her family moved to Wilmington, Del. in 1940. She graduated from Conrad High School in 1941 and received a degree in nursing from Delaware Hospital in 1944. She met Edward L. Hughes at White Crystal Beach in 1940. They married on September 2, 1943. Upon receiving her nursing degree she entered the U.S. Army in 1945. She was soon transferred to the Army Air Corps and served as a Nurse until the end of 1945. She was an Obstetrical Nurse for Kent General Hospital and worked for many years as a Nursing Supervisor at Delaware Home and Hospital. Sara was an avid reader and never saw a word puzzle she didn't want to solve. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Edward L. Hughes; her three brothers; and a sister. She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Hughes of High Point, N.C., Susan Swann and husband, Steven of Kenton and Martha Widing and husband, Chris of Still Pond, Md.; her granddaughter, Christine Bailey of Hartly; her grandson, Jared Rochester of Newark; her great granddaughter, Sarah Bailey of Hartly; many nieces and nephews who kept in touch; and Betty Grant of Smyrna who remained a faithful friend to the end. A viewing will held on Monday, April 18, 2016 from 11 am to 12 pm in Kenton United Methodist Church, located at 74 W. Commerce St. in Kenton. Funeral services will begin at 12 pm. Burial will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kenton United Methodist Church, 74 W. Commerce St., Kenton, DE 19955 or to Kenton Ruritan Club, 249 Main St., Kenton, DE 19955. Condolences may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com.
