Samuel James "Sam" Leggins, 44
BRIDGEVILLE - Samuel James "Sam" Leggins of Bridgeville died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2006, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 44.
Mr. Leggins was born March 22, 1962, in Mobile, Ala., son of Mary Lee Snell and Joe Martin.
His uncle, Robert, took him in and made sure he had the best of everything. He could count on Robert for anything.
He received his education in Cape Henlopen School District.
Mr. Leggins was a great football player and wore number 22 proudly. He was a fanatic of just about any sport and loved to get debates on the topic started.
After graduating in 1981, he worked at Draper King Cole, Milton, until the closing of the plant. He was employed at Allen"s Family Food, Harbeson, and Townsend-Mountaire plants, Selbyville and Millsboro. He also worked part-time at Rose and Crown, Lewes.
Mr. Leggins was a hard worker, regardless of his illness, and made sure that his children were taken care of, having everything they needed. His faith enabled him to stand strong in the battle with his illness. His family could see that he was not a slacker, and he never complained about his illness. He was a cheerful, fun-loving person that touched the lives of many.
He was known for making people laugh and uplifting their spirit.
Mr. Leggins was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Milton, and St. John"s Second Baptist Church, Millsboro. He also played softball for Bethel A.M.E. Church and sang in the men"s choir.
He was preceded in death by a niece, Felicia Parsons.
He is survived by a son, Vincent Leggins of Milford; a daughter, Ariel Price of Ellendale; his mother, Mary Lee Snell of Whistler, Ala.; his father, Joe Martin of Mobile; a special friend, Marie Johnson of Felton; his extended family, James and the Rev. Annie Custis of Lewes; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Esther Elaine Parsons of Mobile, Cealon Leggins and Eddie Moore, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Sandria and Talmandage Evans of Saraland, Ala.; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Paul Leggins and John Jr. and Sherma Snell, all of Mobile, Frank and Gladys Snell of Prichard, Ala., and Sgt. Joseph Douglass and Roselyn Snell of Killeen, Texas; six aunts, Pauline and her husband, James Murray, and Aileen Leggins, all of Milton, Annie Ruth Lane of Charlotte, N.C., Mary Ann and her husband, the Rev. Donald Davis, of Lincoln, and Lelia and her husband, Eddie Badger, and Martha and her husband, Tony Hinton, all of Greenwood; a great-aunt, Hattie Bea Griffin of Vallejo, Calif.; four uncles, David Luvern Leggins and Robert and his wife, Patsy Leggins, all of Milton, Freddie and his wife, Joan Leggins, of Dover and Amos Leggins of Brooklyn; his extended Custis family, Debbie, Anna, Jimmy and Eva; nine nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins and friends.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in St. John"s Second Baptist Church, 26602 Mount Joy Road, Millsboro.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the church.
Burial will be in Henlopen Memorial Park, Lewes.
