CLAYTON, DE - Samuel "Sammy" Dixon, III passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Bayhealth Kent Campus in Dover, Delaware.
He was born on August 6, 1947 in Dover, the son of the late Samuel Dixon, Jr. and Myrtle (Jones) Dixon.
Sammy was a self-employed farmer all of his life who was known for his hugs and firm handshakes. He was always there for everybody and was well liked and respected in the community.
In his younger years, Sammy was a member of the first wrestling team in Smyrna and created a move that he was widely known for through the entire state, the Sammy Dixon move, known simply as the "Sammy Dixon," and even though his opponents knew it was coming, they could never stop it.
He was a member of the FFA, 4H, Farm Bureau, Holstein Association, Kenton United Methodist Church, and coached Little League for Smyrna/Clayton and also coached Pop Warner. Sammy showed cows for 65 years with his family every year at the Delaware State Fair. He was proud to have clean vehicles and his motto was, "If it don't shine-it aint mine."
In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by two nephews, Kenneth Warren and Wade Caldwell.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Ann; his three sons, George Dixon of Middletown, DE, Sam Dixon (Nicole) of Smyrna, and Randy Dixon of Clayton; four grandchildren who he had a passion for, Jayden, Payton, Paxtyn, and Sammy V; five siblings, Judy Cook of Kenton, Betty Caldwell (Danny) of Lewes, Lillian Warren (Elmer) of Kenton, Edna Givens (Jim) of Smyrna, and Marty Dixon (Marcia) of Clayton; and many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Sammy loved going to his grandchildren's and family gatherings. He had the love of his family.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023 from 6 to 9 PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main Street in Smyrna and again on Friday, June 16, 2023 from 10 to 11 AM. Funeral services will begin Friday at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park in Dover, DE.
