BEAVERDAM, Va. - Ruth Smith Rich of Beaverdam died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, in Henrico Doctor's Hospital-Forest, Richmond. She was 84.
Mrs. Rich was a devoted teacher of seventh- and eighth-grade special education classes in the Seaford School District, Del., for about 20 years.
She often commented on what a happy and full life she led, from her childhood in Goldsboro, Md., through her marriage to Charles Alexander Rich, their move to Seaford, Del., and their final move to Beaverdam in 1995.
She loved music, adding her beautiful alto voice to the Symphonic Chorus and Mount Olivet Methodist Church Choir, Seaford for many years. She also enjoyed playing the piano, and especially, her organ. In Seaford, Ruth was in many bridge clubs and was an active golfer. After moving to Beaverdam, she continued to play bridge and sang in the Beaverdam United Methodist Choir for several years.
Mrs. Rich and her husband were representatives for the American Field Service Student Exchange Program in the Delmarva region for 10 years after they hosted their Swiss daughter, Dorothy, from 1959 to 1960.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Alexander Rich in 1999.
She is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Penny Rich and James C. "Dutch" Dorschel, both of Beaverdam.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the Beaverdam United Methodist Church.
