MILTON - Ruth C. Smith passed away peacefully at Milford Center on Thursday, January 21, 2021.
Ruth was an awesome wife, mother, grandmother, and a great friend to so many people. She was a mother to the 'motherless' and treated everyone like family. Ruth touched the lives of so many in the Milton area, as well as serving her community for several years through the Milton Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She worked at Draper King Cole in Milton for many years as an office manager. She loved her son and daughter-in-law whom she played an enormous role in both of their lives. She adored and loved her four beautiful granddaughters unconditionally, who she was so proud of, as many awesome memories were made with 'Granny.' Eddie Calhoun and Laura Calhoun Brown were like a son and daughter to her and she much appreciated the care they gave her when she needed it most. She is loved by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Bertha (Green) Calhoun; her soulmate from high school and her husband, Elmer B. Smith, Sr., who passed in 1995; her brother, James P. Calhoun; sister, Elizabeth Calhoun Hopkins; and nephews, Jim Calhoun and Ronnie Calhoun.
She is survived by loving family, son, Elmer B. Smith, Jr. and his wife Sandy; granddaughters, Hannah Smith, Grace Smith, Sarah Smith, and Annalise Smith; nieces and nephews, Laura Calhoun Brown and husband Richard, Eddie Calhoun and wife Donna, Brenda Calhoun, Dawn Calhoun, Sherry Calhoun Reed, Beth Brown Scott, Bridget Brown Doel, Carrie Calhoun Robinson, Melissa Calhoun Banning, Tammy Calhoun Joseph, Pat Hopkins Crabb, John Hopkins, Jr., John Hopkins III, Donna Hopkins Gooner, Tina Morris Hilligoss, and Elizabeth Morris Stiffler.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, DE 19968. Due to COVID restrictions the funeral will be limited to close family. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton. All those in attendance must wear a mask and adhere to social distancing and gathering protocols.
