Ruth Ann Messick

Farmington - Ruth Ann Messick went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Milford Memorial Hospital, following recent surgery. Mrs. Messick was born, February 14, 1931. She was the daughter of Hugh and Ruth Vincent. She graduated from Greenwood High School, class of 1949 and served on the Greenwood Alumni Association executive board for many years. Ruth Ann worked 20 years at the Peoples Bank of Harrington. Later, she served as a bookkeeper for Thomas E. Moore, potato broker and then Edgewater Farms, owned by the Bergold family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Robert E. Messick. Mrs. Messick was a lifelong member of the Farmington Church of the Brethren, where she served as a board member and church treasurer for 40 years. She loved her hometown of Farmington, keeping yearly scrapbooks and pictures of local events. She served the Farmington ladies auxiliary as president and charter member. Ruth Ann and her husband, Bobby, organized the Peach Blossom 4-H club in 1963, focusing on youth citizenship and community service. Their club, over 40 years, produced nearly 1,500 Delaware 4-H alumni, winning numerous national and state awards. Mrs. Messick has received many awards for her community volunteer work. In 2002, she was chosen as a Jefferson Volunteer State winner. She also received the Governor's award for Outstanding Volunteer work in 1999. In 2009, she received the Joy Sparks Spirit of 4-H award for Kent County. Ruth Ann and Bobby were inducted into the Delaware 4-H Hall of Fame in 2014, while Ruth Ann has been selected into the National 4-H Hall of Fame, class of 2015. Mrs. Messick had a love for politics and enjoyed many friendships with local, regional and national politicians. Her home was always a welcome stop for candidates when campaigning in the first state. She served as Kent County Democratic chairwoman and was honored to receive the 30th District Democratic Honor Award in 2010. Bobby and Ruth Ann loved visiting with many friends, especially at Arby's in Harrington, Hardees on Wednesday mornings and Wilson's Sale every Saturday night in Lincoln. She is survived in death by three daughters, Rebecca (Daniel) Vanderwende, Rita (Donnie) Lofland and Rochelle (Townsend) Yerkes; and eight grandchildren, Breck (Pam) Vanderwende, Danna (Shane) Carter, Christy (Scott) Wright, Amber (John)Campbell, Derek Lofland (Karen), Devon (Eric)Crescenze, Tyler(Stephanie)Yerkes and Lauren Yerkes. She also loved her five great grandchildren, Alanna Vanderwende, Maci Carter, Brielle Carter, Aydan Vanderwende and Chance Wright; and two step great grandchildren, Aynasti Bowden and John Campbell Jr. Friends may call Monday evening, September 14, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Farmington Fire Hall. Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Farmington Fire Hall. Interment will be in St. Johnstown Cemetery, Greenwood. A special thank you to her loving caregivers, Jeanette, Ida, Faye, Rachel and LaTisha and the Milford Memorial ICU team.
