Ruth A. Wicks

Ruth A. Wicks, 87

SMYRNA - Ruth A. Wicks, of Smyrna, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 87.

Mrs. Wicks was born June 29, 1920, in Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., daughter of the late Thomas A. and Bertha (Carlson) Maxwell.

She worked as a bookkeeper in New York City before moving to Delaware and starting a family farming operation with her husband, Arthur F. Wicks, who passed away June 8, 2000.

Mrs. Wicks received her bachelor's degree from Hofstra University, where she was captain of the fencing team.

She was also a member of the New York City Fencers Club until 1951.

Mrs. Wicks was also an avid golfer and a member of the Delaware Women's Golf Association and Garrisons Lake Golf Club.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Wicks, in 1980.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann Link of Orlando, Fla.; two sons, Keith Wicks at home and Arthur Wicks Jr. and his wife Gail of Smyrna; a brother, Thomas A. Maxwell of Marshall, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Jaime, Lauren and Arthur Wicks III, all of Smyrna.

Services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Association of Delaware, 2306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
