Roland Benson Sr., 82

LINCOLN - Roland Benson Sr. of Lincoln, son of the late Sallie and Emmanuel Benson, was born July 17, 1924, in Milford. He transitioned from his earthly home to his heavenly home on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 82.

Roland was educated at the John Wesley School in Milford. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served his country during World War II. Early on, he met and married the late Grace Macklin, and from that union two children were born.

He retired from federal government civil service at Dover Air Force Base in 1987. His previous occupations were that of a plumber for Warren Lynch Plumbing, and a farm laborer on the Robert Wilson Farm.

He was a loyal, committed and active member of Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Harrington, serving in the following capacities: senior lay leader, adviser to the Men, former member of the board of trustees, choir member and past president of the Methodist Men. Roland was also a former member of the Harrington Historical Society.

Roland was the patriarch of the family and was admired as the family's walking historian. If you wanted to know about the family history, he was the man! He could remember dates, times and places as if it were yesterday. He was a humble, caring, mild-mannered gentleman who touched the lives of many people. He loved people and people loved him. He was always willing to help others in any way that he could. It wasn't unusual for him to regularly maintain weekly or monthly telephone contact with his brothers, sisters and others - checking on their welfare. He also cherished the time that he spent with his grandchildren. When he was able, he enjoyed hunting wild game as his favorite hobby.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Bessie (Pettyjohn) Benson; seven brothers, Francis, Ed, Randolph, Oscar, Harry, Charles and James Benson; and one sister, Dorothy.

He leaves to cherish his memories two children and their spouses, Mary Grace and John Glascoe of Virginia Beach, Va., and Roland Jr. and Vida Benson of Lincoln; four brothers and their spouses, Alex, Carl and Frances, and Leroy, all of Harrington, and Delbert "Eugene" and Delores of Cambridge, Md.; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Beulah Collick and Catherine Stevens of Harrington, and Louise and John Gray of Chandler, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Katrina Glascoe, Jonna Turner (Calvin) of Virginia Beach, Renee Mosley (Leon), Lisa Bordley (Arnold), Marlene Roussaw of Dover, Amanda Williams of Felton and Rolinda Outlaw (Wayne) of Easton, Md.; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Anna Benson, Esther Benson of Cambridge and Virgie Lewis of Dover; a devoted niece and nephew; Harry and Angie Benson of Milford; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Slaughter Neck.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the church.

Interment will be in the Siloam Cemetery, Slaughter Neck.

Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Milford.
