Robert Underwood, 72
SMYRNA - Robert Underwood of Smyrna died Thursday, May 24, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 72.
Mr. Underwood was born March 5, 1935, in Russellville, Ark., son of the late Lester and Etta Mae Pitcock Underwood. His family moved to Wilburton, Okla. in 1942.
He was a veteran during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, retiring in 1973 after 20 years of service as an electronics technician in the U.S. Air Force. He served in the United States, Canada and Europe. After his military career, Mr. Underwood worked in retail sales for 20 years at Woolco and then Delmar Appliance, as well as 13 years as the custodian at the First Southern Baptist Church, Dover.
He was an active member of First Southern for 40 years, serving as deacon, music director and Sunday school teacher.
Mr. Underwood loved his family and his faith.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marticia Minyard and Wilma Haskins.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Gloria M. Hanson Underwood; a son, Keith Underwood and his wife, Gail Smith of Lewes; a daughter, Donna Souza and her husband, Rodney of Dover; two brothers, Lester Underwood and Vernon Underwood, both of Oklahoma; two sisters, Christina Williams of Missouri and Carolyn Underwood of Texas and two grandchildren, Kimberley Souza and David Souza.
Funeral services will be noon Tuesday in First Southern Baptist Church, 761 S. Little Creek Road, Dover, where fiends may call two hour earlier.
Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Memorial Fund at First Southern, 761 S. Little Creek Road, Dover, DE 19901.
