Robert James 'Bobby' Downes, 61

PONDTOWN, Md. - Robert James "Bobby" Downes of Pondtown died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, in Christiana Hospital, Newark, Del., after a lingering illness. He was 61.

Mr. Downes was born Jan. 6, 1945, in Queen Anne's County, son of Henrietta Gibbs. He was raised by his adopted parents, Bessie and Roy Downes of Pondtown.

He received his education from Queen Anne's County Public School System.

Mr. Downes worked several jobs before working for Local 199 in Wilmington, Del. He retired due to his illness.

He enjoyed bowling, pitching horseshoes and basketball.

Mr. Downes attended Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Pondtown, at an early age. He later joined Mother Union American Methodist Episcopal Church in Wilmington.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Ann Downes whom he married Jan. 19, 1963; three children, Donny Downes, Lamont Downes and Lori Downes, all of Pondtown; three daughters, Jaki Flood of Wilmington, Xavier Fisher of Greensboro, and Lynissa Downes of Elkton; a son, Rassan Downes of Wilmington; his mother, Henrietta Gibbs of Churchill; five brothers, Gene Dodd and Bobby Dodd, both of Churchill, Eric Dodd and his wife, Karen of Quaker Neck, Richard Dodd and his wife, Dorothy of Frederica, Del. and Linwood Ringgold of Washington D.C.; two sisters, Betty Downes of Pondtown and Carolyn Wilson of Churchill; a foster sister and brother Blanche Taylor and Robert Taylor, both of Philadelphia; six brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; 20 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and numerous friends.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Pondtown.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the church where friends may call two hours earlier. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Church Cemetery.
