Robert Eugene Kelley Sr.

Massey - Robert Eugene Kelley, Sr. 'Gene' passed away on April 4, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Gene was born on April 14, 1927 in Galena, MD, son of the late James R. and Evelyn Palmatory Kelley. Mr. Kelley served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and from 1946 to 1948 with U.S. Merchant Marines. He began his career working for Choptank Electric Corporation, Purina Feed Mills, Wilson Cabinet Company and Losten's Dairy, and in 1965 became an Insurance Agent for Home Beneficial, retiring in 1989 after 24 years of service. Since 1955 he has lived in Massey, where he built and maintained the Flag Pole at four corners. He was a member of Shrewsbury Parish Church and St. Clements Church, was past president of the Galena Lions Club, coached Little League and was a Boy Scout Leader. Gene enjoyed his vegetable gardening and helping others. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kaye E. Barrett; grandson, Jason Duhamell; two brothers, Thomas and J.R. Kelley and two sisters, Norma Boykin and Rita Savin. Mr. Kelley is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ethel Hollett Kelley; five children, Robert E. Kelley, Jr. (Carey) Charles Russell 'Rusty' Kelley (Marion) all of Salisbury, Ethel K. Duhamell (Jack) of Galena, Paul W. Kelley and Sue West (Doug) of Chestertown; a brother, W. Donald Kelley of Smyrna, DE; two sisters, Kay L. Ollivier of Chestertown and Eileen Dugan of Wilmington, DE; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 9, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, MD, where funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Massey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to Shrewsbury Parish Church, Presbyterian Church of Chestertown or Galena Vol. Fire Company in care of Galena Funeral Home. www.galenafuneralhomeofsls.com
