Rickey V. Gilbert

WESTMINISTER, COLO. - Rickey V. Gilbert departed this life on Jan. 10, 2016 after a short illness at his Dover home surrounded by family and friends. He was born on Dec. 31, 1950 to the late Evelyn and Van Leer Gilbert. Rickey graduated from Howard High School in Wilmington in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army for approximately 20 years, also serving a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. Rickey was a professional truck driver for many years, becoming owner/operator for over 15 years, most recently with TSL Trucking Company whose headquarters are in Omaha, Nebraska. Rickey helped people in the community. Rickey was a fun loving, kindhearted brother, father, uncle, cousin and friend who never met a stranger. He was the glue that kept his family and friends together. Rickey was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and Van Leer Gilbert, Sr.; a niece, Lakishia Ireland; two aunts, Vivian Garner and Dorothy "Aunt Dot" Broady; two brothers, Van Leer and Anthony Gilbert; and a sister, Alice Toppin. Rickey leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Asiah; and granddaughter, Annalyce Daley of Colorado Springs; his sisters, E'von Thomas, Verna (Barbara) Heath, Catherine Fountain of Dover, Patricia Gilbert of Baltimore, MD; brothers, James (Jimmy) Emmitt Gilbert of Dover and Stewart Gilbert of Colorado Springs; special niece, Tanya Gilbert Reed; and nephew, James (Mike) Reed; special cousins, Bonnie and Walter Gilbert and Francine Lewis of Newark, and Donald Gilbert of Wilmington. He had a host of nieces, nephews and cousins that shared a special bond with Rickey; as well as his TSL Trucking Company, his Colorado family and friends and a host of friends near and far. A funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016 at Calvary Baptist Church, Queen and Fulton Streets, Dover, DE 19904 where there will be a viewing on Saturday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. Burial will be private.
