Richard Gerald Winchell

Richard Gerald Winchell, 80 DOVER - Richard Gerald Winchell, of Dover, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, in Kent General Hospital. He was 80. Mr. Winchell was born Oct. 30, 1929, in Boston, Mass. He served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force retiring in 1967. Mr. Winchell was deputy sheriff of Kent County and active in Kent County Democrat politics for many years. He was District Council Executive of the Delmarva Council of Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Winchell was a longtime treasurer for the Camden Wyoming Fire Department, a Delaware Fire Police Officer, and an active member of the Camden-Wyoming Rotary Club. He worked for Torbert Funeral Chapel as a funeral directors assistant and driver; he contributed significantly during the post-911 crisis driving remains of victims of Flight 77 and Pentagon personnel to their final destination. Mr. Winchell had a long history of volunteer and public service in Kent County. Mr. Winchell is survived by his wife of 53 years, Theresa Winchell of Dover; his son, James Winchell of Wyoming; his daughter, Maria Winchell and her husband David B. Spence of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Samantha Winchell of Seaford, and Jack and Michael Spence, both of Austin, Texas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 11, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State Street, Dover. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday evening at Camden Wyoming Fire House, 200 E. Camden Wyoming Avenue, Camden. Interment will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 12, in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Camden – Wyoming Volunteer Fire Department Trust Fund, P.O. Box 186, Camden, DE 19934. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
