MAGNOLIA - The Rev. Melvin Williams Jr. of Magnolia slept on into eternal rest Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 69.

The Rev. Williams was born Jan. 26, 1938, in Melfa, Va., son of the late Melvin Williams Sr. and Lola Hayles.

He was educated in the Delaware and Philadelphia public school systems. Later he joined the Navy from 1954 to 1968 and received an honorable discharge. He received his high school diploma and his bachelor's degree during his tour.

The Rev. Williams went into retail management for 41 years in the Philadelphia and Delaware areas. In 1981 he enrolled into the International Bible Institutional receiving an associate degree in Biblical Doctrine and his teaching certificate. In 1983, he was ordained a reverend.

Moving back to Delaware in 1989, he enrolled in Reveal Truth Institute under Dr. John Bagley receiving a certificate in the Old Testament Survey also in the United Fellowship Ministries Bible College, Dover.

In 1996, he became the pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Middletown, where he remained pastor until October 2006. In November 2006 he and his family attended Solid Rock Baptist Church, Dover, where he remained until his passing.

The Rev. Williams was a concerned, kind and sincere people person, always giving of himself. Our Lord and Savior was always first in his life.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Barbara Williams of Magnolia; four sons and a daughter-in-law, Keith and Robyn Mills of Chestertown, Md., Melvin L. Williams of Harrington, Nathan L. Bowers Jr. of Magnolia and Anthony D. Bowers Sr. of Wilmington; three daughters and a son-in-law, Shawne and Jeffery Gammon of Philadelphia, Iris Bowers of Harrington and Karen Burroughs of Jacksonville, N.C.; a brother and a sister-in-law, Joseph and Agnes Hayles of Philadelphia; a sister, Shirley Robinson of Philadelphia; his mother-in-law, Beatrice White of Dover; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three aunts; three brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; a spiritual son, Rev. George Sadler and his wife, Helen of Bear; a host of other relatives and friends; and his Solid Rock Church family.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Calvary Baptist Church, Route 8, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.

Burial will be Monday in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
