R. Benson DuVall, 86

R. Benson DuVall of Rock Hall died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, in Chester River Hospital Center, Chestertown. He was 86.

Mr. DuVall was born March 26, 1920, in Elvaton, to the late Reverdy Benjamin and Ruth Benson DuVall.

He attended public schools in Glen Burnie and graduated from The Maryland Institute in 1941 with a certificate in architectural design.

Mr. DuVall was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946.

He worked with his father as a carpenter with Thomas Hicks & Sons, as a carpenter in commercial construction with Maryland Drydocks as a mold loftsman, with Nuttle Lumber Co., as an outside salesman along with estimating and design, and as general manager with RHS Enterprise.

He enjoyed fishing and boat building, and he finished 13 24- to 32-foot vessels.

Mr. DuVall was a member of the board of education from 1963 to 1980, serving as president for 10 years, a founding member of the Chesapeake College board of trustees for seven years and Kent County Board of Recreation & Parks for five years. He also served 10 years on the Rock Hall Town Council, as a member of the planning commission for six years and a member of the board of zoning appeals for six years. He was a member and past master of the Mason"s Chester Lodge A.F.&A.M. 115 and a member of Rock Hall United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary E. Williams; and a brother, Thomas DuVall.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Sauter) DuVall; a son, David B. DuVall of Annapolis; a daughter, Lynn E. Palmer of Thailand; a brother, William Douglas DuVall of Pasadena; two grandchildren, Russell Nordhoff and Bethany Francisco; and three great-grandchildren.

Masonic services will be 11 a.m. Monday followed by funeral services in Rock Hall United Methodist Church, Rock Hall.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Rock Hall United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 66, Rock Hall, MD 21661.
