SMYRNA - Phyllis M. Fettinger passed away peacefully on Feb. 17, 2015. She was the youngest of four children, born to Sylvia and Claude Hodgson in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y. She graduated from Jamaica High School in 1956 and married John J. Fettinger in 1958. Phyllis lived in Bayside, Levittown, and Huntington, N.Y.; Gulf Breeze, Fla.; Alexander, N.C. and Smyrna, Del.with her husband of 57 years. She was an outgoing and energetic woman who wore many hats and was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and was active with her children and grandchildren. She worked for Western Electric, Consumers Distributing and loved being a school bus driver in N.Y. Phyllis earned a BA in Social Work from Adelphi University and worked for the Long Island Developmental Center serving the autistic and mentally handicapped. She was a case worker for the Council on Aging and Meals on Wheels program, volunteered teaching illiterate adults to read and was involved with Head Start and autistic programs. She also worked with Easter Seals in Dover, the MOT Senior Center and was a past President of the Clayton Lions Club. Her true passion was stamp collecting. She was President of the Stamp Club in Asheville, N.C. and Vice President of the Dover Stamp Club. She was a champion for the disabled and disadvantaged, loved golf, bowling, tennis, Sudoku, was a devoted N.Y. Islanders fan, loved organ music and driving her convertible with the top down. Phyllis is survived by her husband, John; her three children, James, Charles and Janet; along with five grandchildren, Alyssa, Ryan, Karsten, Carina and Aidan; and two of her siblings, Nancy Gockley and Larry Hodgson. A celebration of life memorial service will be held Saturday, April 25th, 11:00 a.m. at Cheswold United Methodist Church, 67 Main Street (Rte 42), Cheswold, DE, 19936.
