GOLDEN HILL - Philip A. Gootee, 86, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 19, 2007.
He was born at Golden Hill on May 24, 1920 and was a son of the late Goldsborough and Mildred Wallace Gootee.
Mr. Gootee attended schools at Golden Hill. On Aug. 24, 1940 he was married to the former Sara Veronica Simmons. Some years ago he had worked for the Phillips Packing Co. During WW II he worked on the family farm.
After the war he opened his own general repair shop. In 1957 he started Gootee's Marine at Golden Hill and had also operated the Dorchester County Landfill at Golden Hill for a number of years. Mr. Gootee retired from day to day operations at the marina several years ago and until very recently he enjoyed opening the marina in the morning. Mr. Gootee also owned and operated his own heavy equipment business.
He enjoyed boating and fishing and spending time with his dog, Cisco. Mr. Gootee enjoyed woodworking and had built several boats and also enjoyed working with flowers.
He was a communicant of St. Mary Star of the Sea at Golden Hill and had been in failing health for several months.
Survivors include his wife, Sara Gootee of Golden Hill; two sons, P. Henry Gootee and his wife, Judy F. Gootee of Golden Hill and Tommy Gootee and his wife, Donna R. Gootee of Golden Hill; four grandchildren, Craig Gootee, Phillip A. Gootee II, Jenny Whitten and her husband, Steve Whitten and Nick Gootee. He is also survived by a brother, Leonard Gootee of Golden Hill and two sisters, Polly Hubbard and Mildred Shorter both of Golden Hill and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Paul; a brother, Hoover Gootee and a grandson, Chris Gootee.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church at Golden Hill with the Rev. James Lawler officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining churchyard.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
Pallbearers will be Joe Ammons, Nelson Marshall, Wayne Willey, T. J. Jenkins, Kenny Rubenkonig and Vernon L. Morris Jr.
