DOVER - Patricia Moore Heather passed away peacefully, Thursday, May 4, 2017, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.
Mrs. Heather was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Easton, Md., to the late George C. Moore and Naomi Holland Moore. She grew up in the town of Queen Anne, Md.
She received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Home Economics from Western Maryland College, Westminster, Md., and Mrs. Heather taught Home Economics for 35 years at Dover High School in the Capital School District.
Pat's passing is a great loss for the community. She was loved by those who knew her and she will be greatly missed. Being a true leader and advocate along with Pat's compassion, and generosity highlighted her sense of responsibility to make a real difference in the lives of others. These qualities were especially displayed through her involvement with the Arc of Delaware.
In 1956, she was one of the charter members who founded the Mid-Del Chapter of the Arc, advocating support and services to the disabled in lower Delaware. Since that time she has continued her leadership, advocacy and humanitarian efforts in multiple areas: spearheading group home monitoring, coordinating Palmer Home grants, coordinating efforts for the monthly dances, soliciting contributions for the annual Walk-Run-Roll, serving as President and Vice President of Mid-Del and serving on the State Board of Directors. Pat was the recipient of the Outstanding Service Award for Mid-Del in 2004, the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer in 2007 and the Lifetime Achievement award in 2014.
She was equally involved with the Auxiliary of Stockley Center, DFRC, Dover Century Club, GFWC, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was a charter member of the Zeta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Heather; and brothers, Alvan N. Moore and George C. Moore, Jr.
Mrs. Heather is survived by her twin daughters, Roberta L. and Rebecca L. Heather, of Dover; brothers, William H. Moore (Elizabeth), of Concord, N.C., and John B. Moore (Ruth), of Denton, Md.; as well as several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a special friend and companion, Donald Butterworth, of Easton, Md.
The family of Pat would like to say thank you to her recent caregivers and Delaware Hospice for the excellent care she received.
Funeral services will be held 12 noon, Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd., Dover. Friends may call one hour prior. A private internment will be held at a later date at the Sudlersville Cemetery, in Sudlersville, Md.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to The Arc of Delaware, 2 South Augustine St., Suite B, Wilmington, DE 19804, or the Stockley Center Auxiliary, 26351 Patriots Way, Georgetown, DE 19947.
Letters of condolences may be sent and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com
