Ogden W. 'Peter' Kellogg-Smith, 88
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Ogden W. "Peter" Kellogg-Smith, of Chestertown, died Wednesday May 28, 2008, in Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 88.
Born on April 21, 1920, in New York City, he was the son of the late Jewell and Margaret Shearer Kellogg-Smith.
Mr. Kellogg-Smith moved with his family to the Riggs O'Marlow Farm on the Chester River and attended school in a one-room school house in Quaker Neck, Chestertown, before graduating from The Putney School in Putney, Vt.
He earned a bachelor of arts degree from St. John's College in Annapolis in 1943, studied yacht design under Franz Plunder, attended MIT and the University of Maryland, and earned a master of arts in philosophy from the Putney Teacher Graduate School in 1962.
He also studied sculpture design in Italy and Maryland Institute College of Art.
Mr. Kellogg-Smith went on to teach sculpture design at the Academy of the Arts in Easton.
He served as director and founder at Bay Country Institute and was founding headmaster at the Bay Country School.
He also taught at the Key School, Gunston Day School, Ojai Valley School, and Happy Valley School, where he also served as headmaster.
Aside from education, Mr. Kellogg-Smith's other passions included making sculptures, playing and listening to music, sailing (and working on boats), swimming, walking (or jogging) with his beautiful long-haired red dachshund, working on inventions (marine hardware, mosquito control, and a more efficient internal combustion engine, in which he holds two patents), and enjoying interactions with children.
He has patented a detachable nestable mast step and, as he has said, "was a mediocre but enthusiastic cello player."
Mr. Kellogg-Smith has received several awards in his lifetime, one of which was the Westinghouse Science Fellowship Award in 1952.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Hathaway Blohm; and a brother, Donald Kellogg-Smith.
He is survived by a sister, Joan Van der Goes of Naniamo, S.C.; a brother-in-law, Richard Blohm of Chestertown; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Kellogg-Smith of San Anselmo, Calif.; and by an extended family including nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. June 14 in St. Paul's Church in Chestertown.
