LEWES - Norman W. Cresmer Sr. of Lewes passed away Friday, June 1, 2007, in Beebe Medical Center in Lewes surrounded by his children. He was 72.
Mr. Cresmer was born Sept. 12, 1934, in Willistown, Pa., son of the late James W. and Anne Marie (Grief) Cresmer.
He lived most of his life in Lewes.
Mr. Cresmer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served as a medical corpsman, second class.
He was a member of American Legion Post 17 and VFW Post 7447.
Mr. Cresmer was a certified diving instructor who taught many locals how to dive. He owned a dive shop in the Ocean View area for many years. He was the cornerstone of the diving industry in lower Delaware. He was involved in cleaning local waters and often auctioned items found to benefit the Leukemia Society.
In 1977 he graduated from Delaware Technical & Community College with a degree in nursing. He was one of the first male nurses to graduate from Delaware Tech. He went on to pursue a specialty in anesthesiology. He also practiced as a private duty nurse in the Washington, D.C., area. He returned to lower Delaware to pursue a career in the printing industry, retiring in the early 1990s.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Lynn Stokesbury, in 2001 and his sister, Marie McCafferty.
He is survived by a daughter, Bonnie (Cresmer) Brasure of Vancouver, Wash.; a son, Norman W. Cresmer Jr. and his wife, Christine of Vancouver; four grandchildren, Ashley, Brittany, Cassie and Matthew; and a brother, James W. Cresmer and his wife, Peggy of Lewes.
A chapel service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
A celebration of life will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in American Legion Post 17, American Legion Road, Lewes,
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to American Legion Post 17, American L:egion Road, Lewes, DE 19958.
