
Norman L. Guessford, 90
BEAR, DE - Norman L. Guessford passed away peacefully at his home on July 30, 2023.
Norman was born in Smyrna, Delaware on June 25, 1933 to the late Leroy and Mildred (Lawrence) Guessford. During his life, he also lived in several other towns including Dover, Felton, and Milford, Delaware, and Williamstown, New Jersey.
Norman retired from the U.S. Army in 1974 after 22 years of service. He was also in the Delaware National Guard for 2 years prior to joining the Army. Norman was a Korean and Vietnam War veteran. After retiring from the Army, Norman worked for Masten's Home Center in Milford, Delaware for many years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, and a longtime member of the American Legion.
When he was younger, Norman enjoyed traveling, hunting, and fishing. In the later years of his life, Norman loved to spend time talking and visiting family and friends, reading the newspaper, doing word search puzzles, and telling stories about his life. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing, Phillies games, and old episodes of Gunsmoke.
Norman was preceded in death by his wife, Leonia (Baker) Guessford; partner, Dee Zook; partner, Barbara Prus; brothers, Leroy (Junior) Guessford and Gordon Reed; sisters, Ann Clough and Genevieve Graham-Collier; grandson, Thomas Frank Jr.; and uncle and aunt, Charles and Anna Guessford, who raised him from the age of three.
Norman is survived by his sons, Thomas R. Frank (Molly) of Aledo Texas and Larry Guessford (Katherine) of Bear, Delaware. He is also survived by his grandsons, Christopher Frank (Crystal) of Aledo, Texas, Daniel Guessford of Wilmington, Delaware, and Steven Guessford of Bear, Delaware; and granddaughter, Megan Crites of Bear, Delaware. Norman also is survived by four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Monday, August 7th at Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home at 212 N Broad St., Middletown, DE with a visitation from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. The service will begin at 1 pm. Burial will be on Monday, August 28th, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, DE where a brief committal service with military honors will be held in the cemetery chapel at 11 am.
