ROCK HALL, Md. - Newton Albert Lewis Jr. of Rock Hall died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, in his home. He was 80.

Mr. Lewis was born Aug. 30, 1926, in Newport, N.H., son of the late Newton Albert Sr. and Valmena E. Young Lewis.

He attended schools in Newport and graduated from Towle High School. He graduated from Keene State University with certification in Industrial Arts. He received a sixth-year certificate in guidance counseling from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II in Rosewell, N.M.

Mr. Lewis started teaching in Randolph, Vt., and Shelton, Conn., and finished in Trumbull, Conn. He retired from teaching in 1984 from the Trumbull School System in Southern Connecticut. He will be remembered for setting up the industrial arts department at several new schools.

He was an accomplished cabinetmaker and enjoyed fishing and boating.

Mr. Lewis was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Chestertown, a longtime member of the Ansonia Rod and Gun Club in Ansonia, Conn., and the Kent County Gun Club. He also was a member of the Connecticut Power Squadron.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah "Sally" (McManus) Lewis; a son, Newton E. Lewis of Montgomery Village; two stepchildren, Paul DeFilippes of Washington, D.C., and Portia DeFilippes of Bethesda; a sister, Jean Ray of Franktown, Colo.; and two grandchildren, Danny Hyatt and Emma DeFilippes.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Route 20, Rock Hall.

Services will be noon Saturday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Chestertown.

Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Humane Society of Kent County, P.O. Box 352, Chestertown, MD 21620.
