Nellie Jane (Howell) Carlton, 98

DOVER - Nellie Jane (Howell) Carlton, of Dover, passed away peacefully at the Silver Lake Nursing Center on Saturday, March 1, 2008, with her daughter, Mary Alberta Walker, at her side. She was 98.

Mrs. Carlton was born in Boomer, N.C., on Aug. 4, 1909, to the late Vashti and Walter Howell.

A strong Christian lady, she was brought up in the church and was a member of the Thankful Baptist Church in North Carolina.

Her husband, Waverly Carlton, predeceased her early in life and she relocated to Eckman, W.Va., to be with her parents and raise her family.

There she affiliated with the Wingfield Baptist Church and was active in many activities.

Mrs. Carlton later moved to New York City and became a member of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the Sunday school, Philathea Bible class, Women's Christian Temperance Union, Sunrise Praying Band and many other organizations, serving for more than 50 years.

She relocated to Dover in 1999 and attended the Mount Zion AME Church.

She is survived by two daughters, M. Ozelma Spencer of East Elmhurst, N.Y., and Mary Alberta (Carlton) Walker and husband John of Dover; one brother, Ralph Howell and wife Izuko of Dover; one sister, Selma Travis of Hyattsville, Md.; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; three great-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A viewing will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division St., Dover.

Funeral services will be noon Friday in the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 201 Lenox Ave. and 120th St., New York, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Pine Lawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, N.Y.
