MILLSBORO - Millard F. Murray III (Mitt), age 87 of Millsboro, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, November 12, 2014. Mitt was born in Millsboro, the son of Millard F. Murray II and Beatrice. He graduated from Georgetown High School. Mitt was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Merchant Marines. He was a former Delaware State Trooper, a district manager for Chevrolet and various other entrepreneurial endeavors. Mitt retired from the Barcroft Co. in Lewes in 1986. One of his proudest personal accomplishments was being, at the time, the oldest graduate of DT&CC with an engineering degree at age 72 in 1999. He was proud to serve on the board of the Jean and Joan Foundation at the Tunnel Cancer Center to assist those dealing with cancer in and around Lewes. He was a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge. He was an inspiration to all around him and lived a very full and active life. He was a loving husband, father and pop-pop and will be terribly missed by family and friends. Mitt was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Aubrey P. Murray; and son, Mitt IV. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Almetia J. Murray; children, Cheryl Layfield (Gary) of Millsboro, Missy Kenworthy (Randy ) of Fort Myers, Fla. and Britt Murray (Bernice) of Georgetown; grandchildren, Rodney Layfield (Kim), Derrick Layfield (Sarah), Bradley Layfield, Lacey Kenworthy Davis (Adam); seven great-grandchildren, Macy, Cody, Levi, Taylor, Madge, Garth and Braxton; a sister-in-law, Helen Murray; a nephew, Randy Murray (Sharyn) of Millsboro; a niece, Elaine Rummel and her daughter Tracey of Houston, Texas; and niece, Debbie Brittingham. A memorial service will be 12 p.m., Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, DE 19966, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Mitt's memory to the Delaware State Police Museum, PO Box 430, Dover, DE 19903-0430, or the Jean and Joan Cancer Fund, 18585 Coastal Highway suite 10-151 Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
