Mildred 'Millie' Virginia Virdin, 93

DOVER - Mildred "Millie" Virginia Virdin, of Dover, died on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, in her home, surrounded by her family. She was 93. Millie was born Nov. 14, 1915, in Hinton, W. Va., the second child of the late Daniel F. and Lucille Griffith Myers. She was raised on the family farm in Hartwick, N.Y. Later the family moved to a farm in Frederica. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, (Jett) Virdin, in 1985; also her brothers, William, Joseph, Orville, Albert, Wilbur and Leonard Myers; and sisters, Claudine Myers, Anna Roe, Ruth King, and Shirley Gooch. She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Barbara Jean and Frank Hutchins of Dover, and Joe and Sylvia Virdin of Bonita Springs, Fla.; a grandson and his wife, Keith and Karla Hutchins of Annapolis, Md.; and her only remaining brother and his wife, Bob and Michelle Myers of Tulare, Calif. Millie, worked for the State of Delaware, Division of Motor Vehicles, for 26 years retiring in 1977. She never met a stranger, loved to talk and enjoyed line dancing and being able to get outside and walk. She was often seen by her many friends walking throughout Dover until a broken hip at the age of 89 slowed her down. She recovered enough to continue getting out for walks with the aid of a walker and could never understand people who "just sat around". Millie was active member of Wesley United Methodist Church and devoted many hours to helping others through her work in the church's clothing closet. She also derived a great deal of pleasure from visiting local nursing home and sending cards and notes to shut-ins. As she put it, at the age of 85 the "old folks like to have company too." As a celebration of her 80th birthday, the Mayor of Dover presented her an award as one of Dover's outstanding citizens. Friends may call one hour before time of services. Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday in the Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover. Burial will be in Sharon Hill Memorial Park, Dover. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donation to Wesley Untied Methodist Church Building Fund, Dover. Letters of condolence may be sent online to traderfh@aol.com.
