
GEORGETOWN - Maud Pepper Hastings passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.
Maud was born at home in Seaford, daughter of the late Norval and Lola May (Dolby) Pepper.
She married in 1936 and began house-keeping in Laurel. In the summer of 1945, she and her husband moved to their farm in Georgetown. She worked side by side along with her husband on the family farm, as well as, keeping impeccable records of all aspects of the farm. Maud joined Midland Grange No. 27 in Georgetown on May 20, 1946 and was still a member. During her membership she served as Grange Secretary and Sussex County Pomona Chaplain. During her senior years, she was also a member of Millsboro Senior Citizens. She also attended Wesley U.M. Church, in Georgetown.
As a child, Maud began making quilts and continued until she was 96 years old and was a member of two Quilting Guilds.
In addition to her parents, Maud was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Irving Henry Hastings, who passed away in 1992; four siblings, John Wingate Pepper, Dolby Gooden Pepper, Mabel May Waller, Fannie Helen Ellingsworth; and a son-in-law, Donald W. Taylor.
She is survived by four children, Jo Ann Taylor (William I. Taylor, Sr.), June Ellen Taylor, all of Georgetown, Jennings Pepper Hastings (Lisa S. Hastings) of Smyrna, and James Irving Hastings (Charlene Vogel), also of Georgetown; six grandchildren, William I. Taylor, II, Lynwood C. Taylor, Robin F. Cox, Donna E. Adams, Julie C. Birch and Kendra J. Hastings; nine great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017 in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, with visitation after 12 p.m. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.
