She was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Oxford, N.C., to the late Hattie Overby and Moody Tabor.

Mattie received her general education from the public schools of North Carolina, and soon after relocated to Maryland where she found work laboring in the seafood industry for many years. She worked diligently in various capacities, including basic laborer, processor and cook.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lonnie Montaque; and a grandson, Nathaniel W. Obey Jr.

Those left to cherish Mattie's warm personality and beautiful memories are her loving son, Nathaniel Watkins Obey of Aurora, Colo.; a sister, Estelle Cook; several other sisters and brothers; three grandsons, Theotis, Bobby and Dennis; a special cousin, Mary Overby of Baltimore; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Services will be noon Saturday in Union Wesley United Methodist Church, Chester, where friends may call two hours prior. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
